Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is a service that addresses everyday life. Examples of an individual’s occupations include playing, participating in school activities/social groups/extracurricular activities, employment, completing self-cares (brushing teeth, dressing, making a snack), and being part of a family unit or friend group. An occupational therapist will evaluate what is limiting an individual from participating in age appropriate activities, and work with the individual to overcome these difficulties during individual or group sessions. Occupational therapists facilitate social skill development, motor development, development of adaptive and self-care skills, and sensory processing all in an effort to improve success and self-esteem in daily life activities.

Our occupational therapists are trained to address the following areas:

  • Attention and social skills

  • Cognitive skills

  • Equipment and environmental adaptation needs

  • Fine motor skills, such as grasping and releasing objects

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • Handwriting skills

  • Management of behavioral disorders

  • Self-care tasks (bathing, dressing, brushing teeth, self-feeding)

  • Visual-perceptual skills

Sequential Oral Sensory Approach to Feeding

Our therapists are trained in the SOS Approach to Feeding through the Star Institute for Sensory Processing Disorders. We utilize a team approach with an occupational therapist and speech therapist. We evaluate the 7 systems humans utilize when eating and look at the WHOLE individual, not just the mouth. We utilize both individual and group feeding sessions and work through the 32 steps to eating with the individual. Click here for Red Flags that may indicate whether your child would benefit from our feeding therapy program.

Therapeutic Listening

We offer a lending library of Therapeutic Listening materials and music selections. We evaluate the necessity and create an individualized listening program. “Therapeutic Listening is a specific sound-based intervention that is embedded in a developmental and sensory integration perspective. The music in Therapeutic Listening gives the listener unique and precisely controlled sensory information. The music is electronically modified to highlight the parts of the sound spectrum that naturally capture attention and activate body movement, synchronizing it with the environment. Therapeutic Listening uses electronic modifications, along with the organized, rhythmical sound patterns inherent in music, to trigger the self organizing capacities of the nervous system.” Click here for more information about Therapeutic Listening.

If you have any questions about your child’s physical development, browse our parent checklist below and give us a call today.

How can my child begin?

Call us at 928-854-5439.  All therapy services must be recommended and referred through a primary care physician. Once our office receives a doctor’s script and prior authorization (only applicable for certain insurances) we will schedule an intake meeting. During the intake meeting, you will complete all necessary paperwork and schedule your initial evaluation with a therapist. At the evaluation appointment, the therapist will evaluate areas of strengths and needs to determine if on-going services are necessary.
